Two new additions at the start of the seasonPianist Florian Weber and saxophonist Julius Gawlik joined the NDR Bigband in August 2021.
The NDR Big Band welcomes two musicians to its ranks at the start of the coming season. With the 43-year-old, multi-award-winning Florian Weber, an outstanding pianist with experience in a wide range of musical fields is joining the band. The 23-year-old, highly talented Julius Gawlik brings with him – in addition to his outstanding playing on the instrument – the curiosity and innovative power of a very young jazz generation. Florian Weber succeeds pianist Vladyslav Sendecki in the NDR Big Band, who retired in 2020.
Florian Weber – versatile virtuoso with an international reputation
Florian Weber has been a welcome guest of the NDR Big Band for many years. A musician whose enormous versatility shines beyond his virtuoso playing. Long-standing collaborations with saxophone legend Lee Konitz or with the exceptional trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, but also projects with the rapper Samy Deluxe or playing purely classical piano concerts: “It’s the constant curiosity that drives me,” Florian Weber himself explains. “An inner urge to want to explore further and further into the depths.” As a pianist and composer, he has already been awarded numerous prizes for this, most recently last year as the first jazz musician ever to receive the prestigious Belmont Prize for Contemporary Music.
